Sherri Murchison When my husband and I retired and moved back home to Cookeville, I started looking for volunteer work which would enable me to use my background in education and in school counseling. Several opportunities looked interesting but when I saw the article in the newspaper about Heart of the Cumberland I had to investigate. After attending the training and meeting the leaders and the others who were interested in working with the program, there was no doubt that Heart of the Cumberland was the place for me. The integrity and caliber of the staff and volunteers is exceptional. Heart of the Cumberland is a family who loves, understands and supports each other.
Randy Dalton and I facilitate the 10-12 year old group. The children are very intelligent, caring and intuitive. We have a curriculum which is used to guide the sessions but sometimes the participants take it in a new direction which meets their needs that particular night. It has been a blessing to see the children help each other and to see progress made in the healing process. They know that someone else truly understands how they are feeling. The Heart of the Cumberland is a place of hope for the future and it is an honor to be a small part of this work.
