Journey: Navigating This Maze of Emotions

The teen years can be challenging during the best of times. What happens when a teen suffers a loss? They can feel as though they are trapped in a maze of emotions with no way out. The result is sometimes lashing out and making poor choices that have dire consequences. At Heart of the Cumberland, we believe that teens, if given the right tools, can learn to identify emotions and express them in appropriate ways. Talking to peers who are experiencing the same emotions brings the realization that they are not alone. They then feel as though it is safe to share with other group participants and the healing begins.

Journey: The Road From Loss Toward Healing and Hope

Our Journey bereavement and divorce groups for children begin at Hope Express Bus Station. The participants are given backpacks to collect treasures they gather at each destination along the way. Children create a Journey Booking Album in which they have both visual and narrative sections to remind them of valuable lessons learned at each destination. Whether it is Volatile Volcano or Forgiveness Falls, participants learn about emotions and how to appropriately express them.
