Qualified Charitable Distribution

A powerful way to make a meaningful impact—while reducing your taxable income.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows individuals age 70½ or older to donate directly from an IRA to a qualified nonprofit like Heart of the Cumberland. Because the distribution goes straight to charity, it can count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) without increasing your taxable income.

QCDs are one of the most tax-efficient ways to give—and they make a life-changing difference for grieving children, teens, and adults.

Benefits of Giving Through a QCD

• Satisfies all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)
• Lowers your taxable income — even if you don’t itemize
• May reduce Medicare premium costs
• Supports Heart of the Cumberland’s mission directly
• Simple process—your IRA custodian sends funds straight to us

QCDs provide donors with a unique opportunity to give generously and steward resources wisely.

Who Can Make a QCD?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution may be right for you if:

  • You are age 70½ or older

  • You have a Traditional IRA

  • You want to give in a tax-advantaged way

  • You do not need all of your Required Minimum Distribution

  • You want to reduce taxable income while supporting a ministry you care about

If this sounds like you, a QCD may be an excellent option.

How to Make a QCD Gift

Making a Qualified Charitable Distribution is simple:

1. Contact your IRA custodian.

Tell them you would like to make a charitable distribution to:

Heart of the Cumberland
PO Box 2474
Cookeville, TN 38502
Tax ID (FEIN): 26-3722944

2. Request that they send the gift directly to Heart of the Cumberland.

For tax purposes, the gift must be made payable to the charity.

3. Notify us of your gift by calling us at (931)525-2600 or emailing us at info@heartofthecumberland.org. This helps us ensure proper acknowledgment and designation.

How Your QCD Helps

Your QCD gift directly supports our mission of providing:

  • Christ-centered community grief support groups

  • BEST Groups in Putnam County Schools (faith-neutral program)

  • Discovering Hope Camp for grieving children and teens

  • Art expression workshops, memorial events, and year-round support

Because QCDs arrive without credit card fees, 100% of your gift goes toward serving grieving individuals and families.

Important Notes

  • The maximum annual QCD amount is $100,000 per individual.

  • QCDs can only be made from Traditional IRAs (not 401(k), 403(b), or SEP plans).

  • QCDs cannot be received by the donor before being given to charity.

  • Always consult your tax advisor to confirm how rules apply to your personal situation.
